Through this work we were interested in what kind of spiritual and artistic habits mothers, or other parents, pass on and teach their children, and what kind of habits we create together and communally with our children. Our aim was to explore how artistic work and motherhood intertwine, the challenges and opportunities this combination brings, and how the presence of family and nature influence the process. <img The work is still a work in progress, and is part of my artistic research and investigation on consciousness, mind, concentration and participatory movement practices. Performance was made in a process of several workshops that participants from different backgrounds were practicing concentration, visualization and movement practices, searching for agreements and strategies for shared, egalitarian, collective movement. In this image I am squatting and having my hands touch the ground. And then the feeling or urge to go inside, to dive or dig inside. Correspondance sous terre is a collaborative project between Institut finlandais and Ehkä-production, which brought together Finnish and French artist-choreographers during the spring of 2025. Performance and artist talk was held at Institut finlandais in Paris on Wednesday 25.6.2025. The performance was a continuation of the collective diary-writing practice that the artists shared during two months of spring when nature started to bloom and sprout. In the diary, they shared their inner landscapes through intuitive daily writings about ordinary and extraordinary life, as well as more invisible things. Could inner landscapes dissolve into a collective experience and create moments of interdependence? What kind of connections could be created through artistic-spiritual practices between two countries, through a correspondence that travels under the earth? What kind of energy, questions and ideas could be transmitted underground and what kind of topics rise to the surface? For the project Correspondance sous terre, artists Tilhenn Klapper, Ella Skoikka, Anna Torkkel and artist facilitator Saija Kangasniemi work collectively at the intersection of somatic practices, choreography, writing and language. It was written in 2021 as my Master of Arts thesis in Aalto University. In the research I use praying as a tool to analyze the conception of presence and present it as a praxis of presence; an action that creates connections, opens relations to the world, and through which the self can be examined. To approach the understanding of presence I examined the notions of being, time, body and the self in the contexts of western continental philosophy, posthumanism, western dance and performance art study, as well as Zen Buddhist and Tibetan Buddhist philosophy. The thesis presents a critical view of the modern world, which is defined by movement, performance and efficiency, and enables violence towards the environment as well as towards other beings and species. I researched the topic of concentration through movement and concentration practices as well as through visualization. I presented a practice of workshops and exercises, that strives away from the ideas of performance, efficiency, success and objective, as an example of artistic working methods, that creates a dialectical work platform based on non-productivity, collectiveness and participation. I present the bodily practices as a channel for being together with others, suggesting possibilities for opening up to an empathic relation with the surrounding reality.
